Green bins are coming to Canberra
Over the last few months, many of you have spoken to me, or told me in my survey, how much of a difference a green bin would make to your home and family. Today, the ACT Government has announced the city-wide roll out of green bins for garden waste right across Canberra. It will start with a pilot program in Weston Creek and Kambah in the first half of 2017 (these are mature suburbs with established gardens and are broadly representative of the housing profile of the city). The Government will evaluate it to make sure it’s got the program right before a wider roll-out (this is similar to what occurred with recycling bins in the 1990s).
– bins will be 240L (same as recycling bin)
– it’s an opt-in scheme (some houses and apartments won’t want another bin)
– opt-in will be through a one-off cost recovery deposit of $50 (pensioners and concession card holders exempt)
– bins will be collected every fortnight
The community gets what it needs when our voice is heard – this announcement is a fantastic example of that.
Do you want a green bin at your home?
Do you want the next phase of the roll-out to be in Belconnen? Take my very short survey and let me know if it’s a priority for you.
