Who is Tara Cheyne?

I moved to Canberra on Thursday, 17 January, 2008. I still have the plane ticket.

I’d moved around Queensland throughout my childhood and never really had an answer when people asked me where my ‘home town’ was. But once I moved to Belconnen, I knew I’d found my home town. Quite simply: I live here because I love it.

Since then, I’ve been a passionate community advocate and leader. I’m the creator of popular blog In the Taratory which reviews and promotes things to do in and around the Canberra region. It’s led to numerous other opportunities, including a regular weekly radio segment on 2CC for two years (up until the time I was preselected) and pulling together the national food blogging conference Eat Drink Blog to showcase all Canberra had to offer (together with other amazing, proud Canberra women).

Since 2009 you’ve been able to catch me reading newspapers for those with a print handicap on Radio 1RPH (1125 on the AM dial) and I’ve been a volunteer judge with schools competition Tournament of Minds since 2013.

In 2012, my partner and I bought an apartment in the Belconnen Town Centre. In the same month that we signed the papers, I joined the Belconnen Community Council, and was privileged to serve as its Deputy Chair in 2014 and Chair in 2015. As Chair, I worked hard to increase the BCC’s reach into the community, including engaging via social media and updating all of our branding; was the driving force behind community consultation into the Belconnen Town Centre Master Plan; and made countless community representations. I’ve been proud to serve as a board member of the Belconnen Arts Centre since 2014.

For my day job, I’m a Director in the Commonwealth public service where I’ve led small and large teams. I have a Bachelor of Journalism and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Queensland, as well as an MBA from the University of Canberra.

I have bright red hair, a whippet named Cooper and my favourite bands are Icehouse and Fleetwood Mac.
