Building reforms to give homeowners greater protections

December 11, 2019

On the last sitting day of the year we passed a suite of considerable reforms to the construction industry to give homeowners greater protections.

One of the major areas of reform has been where building corporations have produced substandard buildings and, when called to account, have closed their business to leave the cost of rectification to the building owners. The Government now has new powers to allow rectification orders to be issued to the directors of licensed corporations, and to make directors liable for unpaid financial penalties. The Construction Occupations Registrar can also now publish information about stop work notices if necessary or desirable to protect the public.
