Why this petition matters

Started by Tara Cheyne

In 1997, the Commonwealth parliament inserted a clause into the ACT and NT’s Self-Government Acts which states that these two jurisdictions have no power to make laws with respect to voluntary assisted dying.

This is unfair and unreasonable - and increasingly untenable as States around the country are passing legislation in this area. Territory citizens are being denied their democratic rights and are disadvantaged on the basis of where they live. This situation should not be allowed to persist. The citizens of the ACT and the NT deserve the same rights as any other Australian.

The ACT has a robust and established parliament, a strong jurisdictional identity and our citizens have an expectation that elected, local representatives will be able to debate and decide upon the issues that matter most to the ACT community.

We call on the Australian Parliament to give us back our rights so that our Parliament can decide for itself on this most important issue.

If you agree this unfair situation shouldn't persist, please sign and share this petition.
